The Skin Care Revolution

One of the reasons I love what I do, is because the only constant is change and innovation. Of course there are many other reasons, but following the trends in skincare is no easy task. Looking for the best product, or the next life changing treatment in order to bring the best to our clients forces me to remain at the forefront of what’s out there, as well as up-to-date on the latest research and more.  Well not surprisingly, many new products are revolutionizing skincare. Words such as peptides, probiotics, growth factors, liquid collagen, super fruits, and stem cells are all around us. How do we know which...

Saving Your Skin From Pollution

Did you know that according to some sources pollution kills more people than HIV and malaria, and has been linked to lung, heart disease, and strokes? Their analysis is based on the fact that traffic pollution contains nanoparticles that can penetrate the skin with nitrogen dioxide, linked to cancer. Furthermore, these can cause wrinkles, irritate our skin, and result in a breakdown of our skin barrier. And while we think our homes are free from pollution, we can also be exposed to dust mites, pollen, pet dander, mold, radon, allergens, carbon dioxide and more. While I did not do the research myself, it does make sense that...

Hirsutism

In today’s business landscape, it’s easy to lose sight of your destination and start looking at what others are doing. This translates from trying to be present in your work to looking at your competitors and worrying about what they’re doing. Well, in my case, I like to think that I can only provide my best results when I use my talents to the max and when I believe in what I do. In other words, by being the best I can be, I not only provide a better service to my clients, but I am more at peace and fulfilled with myself. This alignment is simply...

Uneven Pigmentation In Our Bodies

While I was going to write about women’s month today, I decided to write about pigmentation in other parts of our bodies besides the face… And yes, as a woman, I enjoy all the congratulations, but deep down, congratulating me for being a woman is almost like congratulating me for being alive and being a person. Yes, I’ve worked hard and dealt with advantages and disadvantages, but I call that human. And yes there’s the break from work due to maternity leave, but there’s also the miracle of life; so when you congratulate me because you want to make something right that had not been acknowledged, I...

Clearing it up: To Extract or not

When my son’s friend came to visit him recently, I couldn’t help but notice the scars on his skin. Of course I had to bite my tongue to not say anything, but teen acne and acne in general is a major concern for many of us and rightly so, because those pimples can result in scars and pigmentation. In the case of teens, these can even cause them to withdraw from social activities, including social media. Extracting acne lesions from the skin without creating damage is key, but however there is a fine line. Too much pressure and leaving bacteria behind can cause bruising, more scars, and it...

Glycation Sounds Complicated…What Is It?

As I was deciding about what to write today, I thought of glycation. And yes, while we are in the Holiday Season, and having written about ways to enjoy the holidays without worrying too much about those carbs, today I write about the other side of the coin: Glycation…(too much sugar) Glycation usually happens when excess sugar causes covalent bonding between a sugar molecule and a protein or lipid molecule, but without the controlling action of an enzyme so that these protein molecules cross-link with sugar molecules resulting in new sugar proteins. Because our bodies do not recognize these new molecules, antibodies are created causing inflammation in the...

Getting Your Skin Ready for the Fall

So now that fall is almost here, many clients want to get their skin ready for the holidays. While there are many quick fixes that can be done, fall is the season that gets you ready for the grand finale. The season to let go like leaves that fall off a tree. The season to start looking at the year that went by, yet begin to stare at the year that lies ahead. When it comes to skin, we may need to change our skin care routine. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Perhaps use products richer and creamier that maintain the moisture, since now the air is dryer. Also, we...

Alternatives and Complements to Peels

While peels are a great tool in the care of your skin, sometimes these are not the preferred treatment of choice. For example, many clients of mine who have rosacea would benefit more from a treatment that reduces inflammation, as opposed to causing it. Other times, my clients need just a nourishing treatment to replenish those nutrients in the skin.  These are just two examples, but many other scenarios are possible. I particularly have found extremely beneficial oxygen and enzyme treatments. In my case, when I refer to oxygen, I don’t refer to oxygen as a gas, but rather as a product you apply to your skin. However,...

Products and Our Skin Care Routine

Many times when my clients come to my office, they ask me what products they should be using. Other times, they don’t ask for fear of costly recommendations. The truth is that a beauty routine should be designed to fit the person’s lifestyle and budget. However, these “skin care maps” when accompanied by treatments should always include pre-treatment options, as well as “at-home” options for better results. If any of these two are missing, the treatment results may not be the same. When I design these plans, and if a client is on a budget, I always try to incorporate what he/she recently purchased even if these...

How Does Healing After A Treatment Affect The Results?

Many of the new skin tightening technologies create a wound in the skin that provokes for the tissue to be then healed resulting in new collagen and rejuvenation of the skin. This “injury” can be accomplished through chemicals, as in the case of a peel, through heat as with lasers and radio frequency devices, or, as in the case of microneedle and microdermabrasion, with the help of equipment directly on the skin. Many question its effectiveness alleging that whenever you apply heat, you will shrink the tissue and it’s the shrinking that causes the tightening effect, not the production of new collagen; or that the effect of...
