6 Ways to Protect Your Skin Against Sun Damage

Although the sun causes short-term skin damage through painful sunburn, there are many much worse long term effects that we can always see, such as susceptibility to wrinkles, sunspots, and even skin cancer. It’s important that you are aware of how to protect your skin against potential sun damage.

1. Keep up with sunscreen application. Always apply a thick coat of 15 SPF sunscreen or higher. Layers that are too thin aren’t even half as effective as a thick layer, so don’t skimp. Apply at least 20-30 minutes before you’re in the sun and be sure to reapply every two hours.
2. Wear a hat. Hats or dark clothing are good ways to keep the sun from affecting your skin. Stay in the shade or keep covered and you’ll be good to go.
3. Cover all body parts. Some body parts tend to be neglected, such as the ears. Others protrude and need to be taken more care of than normal, like the nose and feet. Be sure that you are thoroughly covering all parts of your body with sunscreen, a hat, or other clothing.
4. Don’t sunbathe. Sunbathers are just asking for trouble when they lay under the sun for hours at a time. Fair-skinned people are the worst targets, especially since they rarely tan and risk getting worse sunburn. Stay far away from tanning beds as well.
5. Clouds aren’t shields. The ultraviolet rays from the sun can and will still affect your skin even on an overcast day. If you think that you can’t get a burn because you don’t see the sun, think again. Even on a cloudy day, it’s important to wear sunscreen.

6. Wear sunglasses. Did you know that it’s possible to “sunburn” your eyes? The sun is harmful to them as well, so protect your eyes with a trusty pair of sunglasses.Don’t know where to look for a really good sunscreen at a good price?
