Our Nails and Our Tropical Climate…

Our Nails and Our Tropical Climate…

My client walked in the door the other day, utterly depressed about her unsightly feet. She had been a model in the past, and now was hiding the feet in the sand when going to the beach. And the truth is that toe nail fungus is quite common. About 50% of us will be affected by it, with the highest rate affecting people over 70. Our warm weather is partly to blame, as it can cause more sweat in our feet.

So what can we do about it? Well, there are several options ranging from pills to over the counter medications. Unfortunately, some of the pills can affect our liver, and that’s why many prefer not to take them. At the other extreme, are over the counter medications, which may or may not be as effective. I personally have had a very good experience in my office, while treating my clients, with lasers. While it may be painful and require many sessions, given that the nail grows slowly, lasers are a natural method to get rid of that unwanted fungus.

In addition, to treatments, there are some measure we can take to avoid spreading and contamination. For example, using fungus powder in the shoes and feet will keep those feet dry. Please do make sure to dry your feet very, very well after a shower. Many times, toe nail fungus develops from untreated athlete’s foot, so over the counter sprays for athlete’s foot may help as well. Wear open-toed shoes or shoes that are comfortable and give your toes space to breath. Avoid contamination from nail salons, gyms and the like.

While toe nail fungus, may be just a nuisance for many of us, in other cases it can not only cause pain, but it can also surreptitiously spread and cause cellulitis and other more complicated conditions. Therefore, timely treatment is key. When in doubt, call Med Aesthetics Miami at 305-356-7402 or email us at info@medaestheticsmiami.com. And remember, as always, “Our Promise Is More Than Beauty”.
