I’m sure many of you have heard of Shakespeare’s play,”To Be or Not To Be”; and while my intention here is not to discuss the play, I happen to find the question applicable to many circumstances in life. For example, this weekend while dropping my daughter in college, and as I was on my way to the airport, I couldn’t stop thinking about how things have changed since I went to college. I was baffled by the depth of the analysis that these students posed, and their desire to have an impact in the world. For them, many answers were not black and white, as when posing a questions such as “To Be Or Not To Be”, but instead they were relative: They were black, white, gray, and everything else. For example, they didn’t define themselves by their nationality, but instead by their way of life, beliefs, and likings.
And yes in our world of skincare “To Be Or Not To Be” is also an important question. That is, do we go all the way natural when selecting products for our skin, or do we choose organic or synthetic. So what’s the difference? Well, natural refers to the use of products that contain ingredients derived from nature. It does not always equal organic. Synthetic refers to products with man-made ingredients. Many people associate these with toxicity and detrimental to our bodies and the environment. Finally, organic refers to those products that contain natural ingredients obtained without pesticides and the like, but are manipulated in a way to conserve their purity.
As with everything, there is no clear cut answer. Some synthetic products are the fastest way to solve skin concerns; while with some organics you need to understand the components and choose them wisely, since their effects can be limited and short lived. Finally, natural ingredients can bring you excellent long term results, but only if the ingredients are of high quality. Decisions, decisions…as with everything, there is no one size fits all solution and the specifics of each situation must be well understood.
