I just finished reading an article on Michael Reichert’s take on what he considered was the disruption of the traditional male model. He contends that the traditional male tends to produce rather aggressive men, who do not generally succeed in their relationships with women, and other cooperative environments. His argument is that the past model left boys feeling lonely and disconnected, and by teaching these how to express their emotions and connect at an emotional level, the result is a stronger, more independent and resilient man. This is in opposition to what the traditional model believed, which was that men were naturally more aggressive; hence cultivating vulnerability was detrimental to them by leaving them exposed to life’s hazards. Reichert affirms that when people, including men, connect to others at an emotional level, they actually become stronger and more independent; yet the opposite approach results in shakiness.
This topic appealed to me because in my office I have noticed that men are taking care of themselves in increasing numbers. In the past, when a male client visited our office, he used to demand that we maintain their anonymity for fear of what others thought of them, and the only ones that openly came were nonconforming in their gender orientation. Well, this has changed to the point that men do not only demand laser hair removal in the beard for ingrown hairs as in the past, but they demand other treatments such as peels, facials, body contouring, anti aging and more. Furthermore, they even let us post pictures on Instagram! As a result, our treatments take into account the difference in the skin between women and men, and the needs of the male client, such as a reduced pain tolerance. While many consider this as metrosexual, to us, it’s just one more person taking care of themselves.
