Lessons from Summer 2020

Lessons from Summer 2020

I particularly love the summer months. I like the feel of the warm weather, with the gentle breeze, and the slower pace that let’s me think. As a hispanic woman, owner of a small business, I am not exempt of my share of challenges. However, in my experience, it is all in our attitude. Time and time and again, life proves to me that our ability to reach whatever we’ve set ourselves up for starts inside ourselves. As we all go through all the challenges of this special summer, it is more important than ever to turn those lemons into a lemonade. This is the time for reflection and evaluation; a time for preparation for continued growth. A time for collaboration and cooperation, and for razor sharp focus.

Precisely because of that, self care is more important than ever. Self care allows us to maintain our inner balance and peace. Self care not only applies to this special summer, but to how we decide to age. It has been proven that the main culprits behind the aging of the skin are glycation, free radical damage, inflammation, and damage to our DNA’s. Out of all of these, excessive sun exposure, more than the 20 minutes needed to supply us with Vitamin D, is responsible for the majority of the damage. I’ve always emphasized a balanced routine. While at times, this may be difficult, as they say, aim high so you reach the stars. In other words, by aiming for a balanced routine, we may not completely get there, but we would be closer than not trying to do so. Summer is a time where people would usually enjoy the beach, which for many, implied getting a summer-body. While a combination of treatments and topicals can help get us there, we can not do so without a combination of sunscreen, a healthy diet, and exercise. It’s also a time for bar-b-q’s, which can make healthy eating easier, as we grill those vegetables and mushrooms. The veggies and fruits will help us prevent glycation. Those 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, as well as those 5 hours of exercise plus strength training are key. At the end, your body will appreciate it. As we take care of ourselves, we feel better about ourselves, and our body and mind can deal with the challenges ahead.
