As I was touring the Art Basel exhibits, taking pictures to post on my social media, I was alerting my friends of the importance of good posture, specially with the head straight. The reason being was that I wanted our necks to look good. And yes, it’s the neck (and hands), the area that is most neglected by us in our skin care routine. We take really good care of our face, but when we reach the neck, we forget to apply sun screen, or even our daily moisturizer. The skin in the neck is thinner, and contains less subcutaneous fat and sebaceous glands. It can have less hair follicles, which result in less structural support. All these factors make it more vulnerable to smoking, stress, lack of sleep and other lifestyle attacks. As a result, the skin in the neck can sag and wrinkle faster than that of our faces. In four words: it shows our age!
So what can we do? Well, to start…don’t forget to apply your sunscreen and your skin care routine. Peptides, antioxidants, retinoids, and exfoliants, just like in the face, should be applied to the neck. Treatments should also be performed as frequently as in the face, but at less of an intensity, due to the skin’s sensitivity. Be careful to avoid the thyroid area when performing lasers or radio frequency, which, but the way, are a really good choice. Particularly, I like microneedling. I am not fond of plasma and have not been convinced of its long term benefits, but I do like peels as well.
