I love the summer with its laid back attitude whether from the vacations, or the heat, or whatever other reason… yet, as it comes to an end, which I can sense from the change in traffic, my stress levels tend to jump. Specially, when all the commercials are already getting you ready for the last quarter of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Holiday Season, but I’m still in that laid back mode and not yet ready to change that pace. So that brings me to the topic today: PsychoDermatology. When I first read about it, finally everything clicked.
I know what you’re thinking: psychotic dermatology!…well no. PsychoDermatology is the use of a holistic approach, which adds meditation, mindfulness, psychology, and even antidepressants and anxiety medication to other dermatology treatments to take care of the skin. Science has proven that stress has a significant impact in our bodies, including our skin, the largest organ. It’s behind inflammation and many other illnesses. Hence the many diseases, such as eczema, autoimmune rashes, psoriasis, acne, and more that are stress-related. We can even include skin picking, hair pulling and more. And don’t forget that itch…given that the skin connects to the brain through the nerves and its receptors. The fact is that there’s a biochemical connection between the mind and the skin via the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. As a result, when dealing with skin conditions, it’s important to look at lifestyle and stress levels, in order to implement a truly holistic approach to skin care. In other words, it’s not just healthy mind and body for, it’s also healthy skin. There are many meditation applications and websites that you can follow or join; however, regardless of what you pick, calming and quieting that mind has now officially been proven to be one of the key elements for beautiful skin.
