2021 is a very special year because it commemorates ten years since our opening. Just like we did ten years ago, we begin the year with a sense of renewed hope and optimism. This is a year in which the need to make time to take care of ourselves has been propelled to center stage. Yes, it is true there is a vaccine for Covid-19, and yes we have learned to protect ourselves with the mask and by maintaining social distance, but as we start 2021 fresh, wellness is now more of a priority than ever. Wellness is not just relative to physical health, but also to the harmony and balance between mind, body, and spirit. A strong, healthy body is central to our well-being and our ability to fight disease, but it is not possible without a healthy mind. The pillars for optimum wellness include nutrition, exercise, relationships, sleep, among others. These should all be part of our New Year’s Resolution. The more we pay attention to these, the better we will feel about ourselves.
If I were to suggest which pillar of total wellness to focus on as part of anyone’s New Year’s resolutions, I would start with nutrition. The more I read, the more I am convinced that an anti-inflammatory diet high in Omega 3’s, low in fat, low in carbs, low in processed foods, with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and with reduced dependence on meat are key to a healthy gut; and a healthy gut has ramifications throughout our body. Next, focus on allowing time for exercise. Cardio, strength, and stretching are all important as we age. Last but not least, the quality of our relationships and connections keeps the cycle of wellness going. Spread the love and it will come back to you. However, the glue tying it all together is listening to our bodies and ourselves to obtain clues and guidance as we confront the many choices in life.
